I am currently working with a framing contractor that wants me that will be bidding on a 14,000 sq ft apartment (turnkey) and he wants me to make him a 3D model and help him with the takeoff for the framing, structural, cladding and windows and doors which is not a problem. I have made another 3D model that is 5000 sq ft and 7.37 MB in size on the viewer and when I send it is very slow and clunky. I need to be able to overcome this problem in order to help them with this project. They also would like their foreman to have it on an Ipad on the job.
In my experience, they do not need everything on site.
some options are
They invest in more powerful machines
Do a Zoom meeting so they can request the bits he needs on site
Remove textures
Only provide a pdf version - ie use the walls layout for frames
Add it to a drive folder
Split the job into sections
Hi Steve_B,
It may be down to the GPU on the computer that’s viewing the 3D Model Viewer file. I tested it out on a model that was almost 9MB (the exported file was 5.7MB) & with a mid-range GPU it handled the file well. What I can recommend trying is to remove any unnecessary geometry/materials & purge the model before creating the model viewer file.
However, another option to achieve your desired result would be to use the Trimble Connect feature within SketchUp to share models with others. I don’t have a lot of knowledge of this feature but I know a model can be shared &/or a link to view the model can be shared. SketchUp also has an app for iPads.
Thanks Grant, I’ll give that a try.
